Veola Johnson

Veola Whigham Johnson was the second of four children born to the union of Quinn Whigham and Essie Mae Stanford Whigham on September 19, 1934. At an early age, Veola confessed Christ and was a member of Sandville Baptist Church in Eufaula, Alabama until she graduated from high school and left home. She sang solos in all of the churches in the community. She had the church and people rocking to her melodious voice. Veola graduated from Van Buren High School in Eufaula, AL in 1953, where she was an honor student. After high school, she lived and worked in Birmingham for several years before moving to Chicago, Illinois. In Chicago, she worked as a Certified Beautician and Health Care Assistant before joining the staff at Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) where she was a Train Operator. She cherished her accomplishments at CTA. Most of all she cherished her co-workers and friends she met and worked with for 25 years. Veola was dedicated to living a Christian life and was a member of several churches in Chicago. She believed very strongly in treating family, friends and neighbors right. She was a very friendly, outgoing and giving person. Veola was married twice and was the devoted mother of five sons and three granddaughters. She remained very closely tied to her sister back in Alabama and traveled back and forth to visit her as often as she could. Family meant everything to her! She had a very good memory and often talked about people and incidents that happened when she was a child. She remembered things that happened with her and her father when she was three years old. Veola departed this world on Saturday, June 17, 2017 and went to be with her Savior. She was preceded in death by father and mother; her oldest brother, Quincy Floyd Whigham and her younger brother, Willie C. Whigham. She leaves to mourn, memoralize and celebrate her life, five sons: Thomas C. Whigham, Lionell Jeffery Whigham, Gregory Louis Whigham, Ahmin Z. Walker, and Darnell Johnson and former wife, Erika Johnson; three granddaughters: Lisa P. Johnson, Alexandria Whigham, and Antionette (Armond) Davis; one sister: Lula Whigham-Marable; one special adopted sister, Dorothy Love, Smyrna, Georgia; and a host of adopted sons and daughters, special cousins and friends. Her passing leaves a void in our lives that cannot be replaced. But we know that she is with her Lord and resting in peace. REST IN PEACE OUR BELOVED-VEOLA WHIGHAM JOHNSON!
