Annie Marie Comer

Annie Marie Comer was born in Columbus, Georgia on November 16, 1938 to the parents of Otis and Annie Grier. She was a loving child who enjoyed her childhood with the company of her brother Otis!. They fussed at each other as they get older, but deeply love each other immensely. She attended Fifth Avenue Elementary School and graduated from Spencer High School. Annie had many skills. She worked briefly at the United States Post Office. She always did some domestic work and even worked for a short time at a neighborhood store. She was a skillful homemaker, who enjoyed cooking, one of her favorite dishes was Creole cabbage. She also was hair dresser who worked from her kitchen. Annie was married to Homer W. Comer for 23 years. They had seven beautiful children. She was a devoted wife and mother. She truly loved her children and would let them know if they were doing good or bad, saying, “You can’t have it both ways, you have to either or bip or bop!”, with her favorite ironing cord on the side. This was her way of showing motherly love. She loved all of her grandchildren, always remembering their graduations and special events. Annie took interest in the Bible when she was in Columbus, Georgia. Her curiosity kept her wanting to know more. She enjoyed what she was learning and continued her Bible study with Edna Brimley after she moved to Chicago, Illinois. On April 19, 1964, Annie dedicated her life to Jehovah and symbolized it by water baptism, becoming a Jehovah’s Witness. She loved talking to people about the Bible and her beliefs. She enjoyed singing and listening to good music. Even though she was a very modest person, she was a clean woman that was very particular about her appearance and clothing. Everything had to be in order. She also enjoyed getting her hair and nails done. If you were not groomed properly she would tell you, “Correct yourself, it don’t make no sense.” Very free hearted, she would host luncheons for the traveling brothers, open her home if they needed a place to stay, prepare meals for the Pioneer school and food for congregation picnics. She sponsored skating parties as enjoyment for the young ones as well, and always giving wholesome gatherings with open arms. When she was able to participate in activities, she would always send a dish or monetary contributions. Annie had been in the Woodlawn community for over 40 years. She knew everone in the neighborhood. Her apartment was upstairs on the 2nd floor above Sister Green on the 1st. The two have known each other for over 50 years. Even when Annie moved, because she could no longer go up the stairs, her new apartment was in the Woodlawn area. She sometimes laughed at herself saying “I guess I can’t get off 63rd Street.” Annie enjoyed her family and her grandchildren. She had an opportunity to have several family gatherings. Annie loved to send out cards to encourage others. If she was upset with you, you were off her list only to soon go back on with a smile. She had a good memory. Annie could remember many wedding anniversary dates. If she needed something from the store, you would probably be the one to pick it up. She had so many friends from all over and had cultivated so many special relationships. Annie had many spiritual sons and precious daughters, and took care of many children. If she ever rode with you, she always had a stop. You will be all over the city of Chicago. She would tell you to pick this up, drop her off, and then take this to that person. That’s the type of individual she was, sharing her love abroad. Annie loved to eat barbecue, and have fine wine, pork skins and peanuts. She also enjoyed eating lemons with salt and other little specialty food. One time her son picked her up and he was very particular about his car, so he told his mother, “Mom please don’t eat those peanuts, you’re going to have them all over my car.” Annie Comer’s life was her ministry for over 55 years, spending 22 years and the full-time service as a regular pioneer. Even when she became ill, she did not forget Jehovah, always sharing her hope with others about the resurrection and living forever without sickness. The doctor stopped in her room to check on her, pausing, listening to a TV news report. While sitting at her bedside, he said “Oh my God!” She politely said “His name is Jehovah.” He looked at her and just smiled. While admitted to the hospital, and during rehabilitation visits, the receptionist would say, “Who is Ms. Comer? She has more visitors than any of the other residents here.” In her moments of feeling better, she was going to start a Bible study with someone. She was known as Sister C, Ann, Annie or Sister Comer. On January 24, 2019 about 3:35 a.m., Annie fell asleep in death. She was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter Katrina M. Comer. She never passed up the opportunity to let anyone she came in contact with know, that she had the hope of a resurrection. Annie Marie Comer leaves to cherish her memories, her brother Otis Greer (Odell); nephew Greg Grier (Pam); children Michael S. Comer, Reginald W. Comer (Janet), Cedric G. Comer, Shonda L. Brown (Steven), and Anna M. Comer; grandchildren Michael Dunlap, Samuel Dunlap, Cassandra Dunlap, Victoria L. Comer, Terri Ann Curry, Terrill Y. Curry II, Brendan A. Hunt and ShaShona S. (Andre) Golston, Shanel D. Brown; along with a host of great grandchildren, cousins, supportive family and friends.
