Edith Marie Brown

Edye's Life Journey Edith Marie Brown was born on April 8, 1947, to the union of Emanuel William Brown, Sr. and Mallie Mae Hall Brown in Chicago, Illinois. Her elementary education began at Graeme Stewart School on the North Side, as well as Yale and Medill Schools. She attended and graduated from Richard T. Crane High School in January, 1964. While in high school, Edith volunteered as a candy striper at Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital prompting her to further her training at Mount Sinai School of Nursing, where she became a Registered Nurse. From there she went on to work at Cook County and the University of Illinois Hospitals, from where she retired in 2009. Years prior, she was contacted by one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, who found Edith in the door-to-door service in 1976. She started a serious study of the Bible with them and dedicated her life to Jehovah God and symbolized her dedication by water baptism in 1978. She served as a Regular Pioneer, a full time minister of the Good News for a time. Edith died suddenly on Tuesday, February 26, 2013. Edye, as she was affectionately called, loved and cherished her family very, very much. She cared for her parents when they became ill until their demise. Being the oldest of five children, her self-sacrificing spirit prompted her to become like a mother to her siblings. Edye was known for her generosity, warmth, compassion, consideration, and loving kindness to all who knew her. Edye loved to dance and listen to oldies music especially when she attended her Family Reunions. She assisted her family in the planning of those reunions with the Winthrop Avenue Reunion Committee. As a youngster until her early teens, Edye spent many cherished years with her brother Chubby, cousins and friends on the 4600 block of North Winthrop Avenue under the watchful eye of the many elder relatives and friends who were extraordinarily close, more like family than neighbors. Edye enjoyed painting, needlepoint, traveling, and most of all, photography. Edith leaves to cherish her memory, her beloved brother, Emanuel W. “Chubby” Brown, Jr. (Louise); loving sisters, Emilie Lockridge (Leland), Lena Antoinette Brown and Donna Arndt (Jason); nieces, Amanda Bridget Walker (Donell) and Ashley Nicole Brown; nephews, Emanuel Jason Brown, Joshua Stephen Brown (Sarah) and Jonathan Alexander Lockridge; grand nieces and nephews, Adriyan and Micah Williams, Hannah Grace and Elizabeth Marie Brown and London Alexis Walker; a special cousin, Joseph Cole; and a host of relatives and friends. Edith will be sorely missed.
