John Hugh King Jr.

John Hugh King Jr. was born November 23, 1948, in Chicago Illinois to the union of John and Arlene King. He was the second oldest of 7 children. Johnny was affectionately known to his family and old North Side friends as “Suedy”. He was known to new friends and colleagues as Johnny. Johnny received his formal education in the Chicago Public School system. He furthered his education and attended Coyne College, where he received his certificate in Electrical Engineering. Johnny lived his early life the way he enjoyed. He later became a man of great faith with a strong zeal for learning and following God’s word. He was a member of the Bread of Life Ministries Church in Uptown, under the leadership of Reverend Milton R. Johnson. Johnny was employed by Chicago Streets and Sanitation and also Motorola Corp. in Schaumburg, IL. He became a neighborhood activist in Uptown. While working closely with Truman College and Alderman Helen Schiller’s office, Johnny founded “Commissioned for the Community”, a mentoring and training program for at-risk youths. Building stronger families and safer neighborhoods, while renewing minds and changing lives. He was somewhat of an ICON, in the Uptown Community. He meant a great deal to many of the youths in that area. He will be truly missed by many of them. Johnny was very protective of his 5 sisters, although he was still on the North Side he was always just a phone call away. Uncle Suedy tried to keep his own great-nephews on the right track, inviting them to Youth Ministry Services, Cease Fire rallies and Stop the Violence Protests. On Saturday December 28, 2013 at 1:32 p.m., after a long battle with cancer, God put Johnny's weary body to rest and called his star to take his rightful place in Heaven. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Arlene King and one brother, James "Rocky". Johnny leaves to cherish his loving memories, a son: Gregory Davis; 2 daughters: Tina Bell and Jaton (DeAndre) Stackhouse; 6 grandchildren: Jonathan, Tashonna, David, Tony, Jamari and DeAndre Jr.; 5 sisters: Patricia, Norma, Diane, Laura and Joan (Gregg); nephews: Versie (Maryanne), Phillip, Lance (Tammy), Quintin, Eric (Faith), Dell (Tondalia), Justin, Vernon and Vonte; nieces: Michele (Johnny), Roxanne, Kerry (Westford), Wendy, Patrice (John), Denise (Ben) and Andrea; 16 great nephews, 9 great nieces and 1 great-great nephew, 2 special cousins: Edward Blake and Ronald Lucas; and a host and other cousins, relatives and friends.
