Mrs. Joyce Mackey

Joyce Ann Mackey was born August 13th, 1944, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Joyce Ann Macon was the third of nine children born from the union of John Macon and Priscilla Macon. Joyce grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana and was educated in the public school system there. Later the family moved to Chicago, IL, where she attended Englewood High School as also where she graduated from. Her first job was making belts and wallets at the Humphrey Leather Co. She also worked at Gately Department Store in the drapes department, helping customers pick out drapes and customizing the drapes. Then she went on to become a seamstress where she would make drapes, quilts, and etc. She also drove for the Pace Bus company in Chicago, IL for few years. When Joyce was a preteen she would often dress up her two younger sisters in the prettiest dresses and called them her real live dolls. Joyce loved to dance she would often jump up from the dinner table when the family was eating and dance to her favorite music. Later in her life she became a daycare provider which lead her to open up East Riverside Daycare located in her home in Harvey, IL, for many years until she retired between the years 2000-2002. In 1965, she married her first husband Hamp Jones, Jr. From this union came oldest daughter Angela Jones (preceded), son Hamp Jones Jr., and youngest daughter Sandy Jones. The couple later divorced in 1979. In 1984, Joyce remarried her second husband Elmer Mackey Jr.(preceded). The couple became a beautiful blended family along with Elmer Mackey’s five children Kenneth “Bobo” Mackey, Launita “Lolly” Mackey, Nicole “Nikki” Mackey, Syreeta “Rita” Mackey, and Christopher Bailey. The couple lived together first in Chicago and then in the south suburbs of Chicago for nearly 30 years or more. Their home was filled with music and laughter. October 18, 2014, Joyce Ann Mackey dedicated her life Jehovah through water baptism, becoming one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, she served Jehovah faithfully until she fell asleep in death. Joyce took pride in her love for fashion. She stayed dressing classy, coordinating her colors. And Let’s not forget how sharp she was in her hats and shades. Joyce Mackey loved to cook. She is known for her delicious creole meals, especially her favorite famous New Orleans gumbo recipe. Joyce Ann Mackey was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, cousin, and friend. On February 18, 2023, Joyce fell asleep n death. Her husband Elmer Mackey, her oldest daughter Angela “Angie” Jones, her step son Kenneth “BoBo” Mackey, her mother and father Priscilla and John Macon and her siblings Terry Macon, Juan Macon, Phil Macon, Malcolm Macon, and Rudy Macon, all preceded her in death. She is survived by Her two children Hamp Jr. ( Loneia) and Sandy Jones; stepchildren: Launita” Lolly” Mackey, Nicole “ Nikki” Mackey, Syreeta “Rita” Mackey and Christopher Bailey; one brother Ronald Macon; two sisters Beverly Duncan and Gwendolyn McNeil (Dave); her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends. She will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
