Lee Roy Phillips

Lee Roy Phillips, son of LeRoy and Wyona (Wilder) Phillips, was born on March 19, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee. Lee Roy attended Geeter High School. He was united in marriage to Hermar Lee Browley and to this union there were six children. Lee Roy took his commitment as a husband and father very seriously. In 1959, he moved to Chicago, Illinois to seek greater opportunities to care for his family. His endeavors started with his entrepreneurial debut "Lee's First Stop". Ultimately, he became a Laborer for James McHugh Construction Company from which he retired on August 19, 1993. If you ever had the pleasure of receiving one of Lee Roy's architectural tours, you would have seen some of the construction sites he was most proud of i.e. The United Center, Original McCormick Place and various places on Chicago's Magnificent Mile while listening to Johnnie Taylor. Lee Roy was a hard worker, jack of all trades and master of many. His career as a Laborer contributed to the foundation for this. Everyone acquainted with him knew, if it was broke he could fix it. If it needed to be built, he would call for an estimate, then say 'Thank you.....never mind.....I'll do it myself'. Lee Roy symbolized his dedication to Jehovah by water baptism on Sunday, April 7, 1963, he remained a faithful servant and served as an elder for many years. His zeal and integrity was always apparent because of his self sacrificing spirit for his spiritual brothers and sisters. He further demonstrated this by always seeking kingdom interest first and finding great satisfaction and joy in having a full share in the ministry. Lee Roy, affectionately known as "Granddad", fell asleep in death on Thursday, November 28, 2013. He is preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Wyona. Lee Roy leaves to cherish his memories, his faithful, DEDICATED and loyal wife of 57 years, Hermar "Hurmah"; six children, Melvin (Linda), Stanley, Calvin (Dora), Lemetria "Meech", Anthony "Uncle" and Kimberly "The Kim"; three siblings, Esther, Ira and Deborah (Durell); 12 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
