Madie Martin

Madie Martin was born December 22, 1932 in Caledonia, Mississippi to the parents of LA and Minnie Lou Salter. She was the fourth of eight children, three sisters and four brothers. Madie was happily married to Dezzie B. Martin for over 50 years and to this union seven children were born, Joann, Brenda, Gwenda Faye, Dezzie Jerome, Ronald, Deborah and Dennis. Madie was a hard working woman and for many years she assisted her husband financially in caring for the needs of her family. After moving from Mississippi to Illinois she began working at a laundry/cleaners in Park Forest, Illinois where she also kept her children clothes clean, starched and pressed, which caused many of their classmates to make good remarks about their clothing many times thinking they were new. She retired from the House of Hughes located in Crestwood, IL in 2002. After a study of God's word, Madie dedicated her life to Jehovah. On January 20, 1974, she symbolized her dedication through water baptism alongside her daughter, Faye Brown both becoming one of Jehovah's Witnesses. She spent many hours in the ministry as an Auxiliary Pioneer where she devoted 50-60 hours preaching the good news about God's kingdom along with her two companions, Janie Poe and Rhoda Poindexter. She also had the privilege one year of working unassigned territory in Kentucky. Madie's favorite scripture was Proverbs 3:5 where it states: "Trust in Jehovah with all your heart and do not rely on you own understanding." She tried to apply this often calling on Jehovah to help her...and he did. She had a deep love for Jehovah and her spiritual brothers and sisters. She would always call the sisters, "Pretty Girls". Madie was a small petite woman and was known for her mild and quiet disposition. She was strong and determined for what she wanted or did not want. On January 14, 2017, Madie peacefully fell asleep in death while holding her daughter's hand. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dezzie B. Martin; her father, LA Salter; her mother, Minnie Lou Salter; her brother, Grady Salter; and three sisters, Sadie Davis, Gladys Taylor and Dorothy Harris. Madie leaves to cherish her memory, her seven children, Joann, Brenda, Gwenda Faye (Paul), Dezzie Jerome, Ronald, Deborah and Dennis (Joyce); 17 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Bobby, Ocie (Aniece) and Billy Salter; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins; other family members and friends, all of which she loved very much and will greatly miss her.
