Odessie Brown

Odessie Brown was born on November 12, 1946 in Brookhaven, Mississippi to A.C. and Irea Brown. Odessie was a momma's girl, who liked to dress well and was known for being a girly girl. Odessie and family moved to Chicago, Illinois where she received her formal education. As a teenager she worked at a local record shop where she developed her love of music and met many Chicago celebrities including Herb Kent. She worked as an Administrative Assistant in the medical field where family and friends joked she should have become a Doctor because of her keen diagnostic skills. The patients at the Dialysis center where she worked appreciated the treats she kept in her drawer for them. The enterpenuer in her led her to start her own jewelry business which flourished due to her fun, loving, and outgoing personality. Bargain shopping was her "second job". Odessie loved family and friends, but her son Steven, was the love of her life. Steven was first in her life, and she loved telling everyone that he was her "favorite son" and was the world's best son because of the way he cared for every need, especially during her illness. Her love of family meant many shared meals where her cooking was the star; family loved being her "guiena pigs" because the food, love and fun she put in the every meal made it all worth while. Stories abound of her love, generosity, kindness and humor; there was not a selfish bone in her body. Love of God led Odessie to study the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses. She had a keen appreciation of the Bible and the hope it held out for a paradise earth where no resident will say I am sick. Always wanting to be present at the congregation meetings, she would listen in on the telephone hookup with the Loomis Congregation and enjoyed discussing the meetings with family and friends. On July 14, 2014, Odessie Brown fell asleep in death. She was preceded in death by her parents, A.C. and Irea Brown and one nephew, Gary Brown. Odessie will be truly missed by many, but especially her loving and devoted son, Steven; siblings, James Earl (Lorraine) Brown, Joell (Thomas) Mitchell, Phyllis Brown and Bernard Brown Sr.; nieces and nephews, Trina (Reggie) Hammond, Dennis (Cris) Mitchell, Gregory and Bernard Jr.(Alicia) Brown; one aunt, Jesse Mae Tyler; and a host of other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
