Ruby Merritt

Ruby Merritt was born Ruby Clark, the youngest of four siblings to Rufus and Delia Clark on November 15, 1915 in Meridian, Mississippi. Ruby grew up as a practicing Catholic until adulthood, at which time she converted to the Church of God. In 1932, Ruby united in marriage to Tommie Merritt. They later moved to Chicago, Illinois to start their wonderful life journey. She worked a variety of jobs, working in the lamp factory, the knitting mill, at Ford Motor Company during the wartime effort and later as a homemaker for her family. Ruby and Tommie later opened their home and hearts to four children, making a wonderful and nurturing home for Josephine, Anna, Nathaniel and Robin. Ruby had a very creative mind and loved decorating and making arts and crafts. Her other hobbies included fishing and traveling. A loving and devoted person who was always willing to share with others whatever the need may be, Ruby willingly volunteered her time at the Door of Hope, Pacific Garden Missions for 30 years until her sight failed her. She also volunteered with other charitable organizations in addition to her church and their ministries. She was a member of the Salvation Army Ladies Auxiliary Choir and a devoted member of her block club, PTA and other organizations. She contributed wherever she could for the betterment of others. She has truly impacted the lives of all who encountered her with her gentle and loving attitude and willingness to pitch in wherever needed. She was devoutly religious and not only attended church, but lived it in her everyday life. On January 10, 2014, Ruby Merritt made her transition. She is preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Leo, Mayola and Curlee; one niece, Dorthy Clark and her husband, T.C. Clark; and in 1987, Ruby's lifetime partner and husband of 54 years, Tommie Merritt. Ruby leaves to cherish her memories, her four children, Josephine, Anna, Nathaniel and Robin; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; one great nephew, Tyshon Clark; two daughter-in-laws, and a host of other relatives and friends. In addition to a long list of friends and relatives, Mom's greatest desire was to prepare for her life home going. We all truly believe that our mother is waiting in heaven. All through life my mother prepared us to be good citizens and positive individuals. Psalms 91:2 - I will say of The Lord he is my refuge and my fortress, my God in him will I trust.
