Barbara Jean Cobb

Barbara Jean Thompson was born November 25, 1939 to Annie Laura Thompson and Joseph Young. Barbara was the fourth child of Annie Laura and the second child of Joseph Young. Barbara’s mother worked for Amtrak railroad, which she was born as a train baby and traveled all around the country. She was educated on the train as well. At the age of 5, they settled in Chicago, Illinois. Barbara attended Frank L. Gillespie Elementary School and also attended Calumet High School. Barbara met and married Oscar Lee Cobb and to that union came Lauren and Rhonda Cobb. Barbara was hired at the United States Post Office as a City Clerk. She worked there for 47 years until her retirement in 2013. She worked part time at the Lords Way Church with the neighborhood kids. She began working at White Sox park until 2019 when she became ill. Barbara loved to dance, she really loved bopping and stepping with her daughter Lauren. She also enjoyed teaching her grandchildren and daughter Rhonda how to bop and step. Barbara loved to play cards, bowling, cooking, and listening to doo wop, the Blues, and R & B music. Most of all, she loved spending time with family and friends. She loved helping people in and out of the community. On September 7, 2020, Barbara departed this life. She was preceded in death by her parents Annie Laura and Joseph Young; her grandson Marques; her aunt Rain; and her great grandson Ahmarrion. Barbara leaves to cherish her memory, daughters Lauren (Ronald), Rhonda, Jacqueline Sharon (Eddie); granddaughters Alana (Ace), Alexis (Toby), and Laurice (Lott); great-grandchildren Marques, Siniyah, Malik, Jacob, and Ah’Myah; special people in her life Regina Bonds, Xazier Allen, Jacqueline Jones, Mycal Brown, Terry Jenkings, James Lloyd, and Charles Godpower; special son-in-law Eric Herring; and a host of other family and friends.
