November 15, 1941 - November 13, 2018
Marion Turner-Butler, “Pud”, was born on November 15, 1941 to Melvin Eugene Turner and Marion Turner in Chicago, Illinois. Marion’s passions in life focused on raising her sons, the importance of education and family connections. She always emphasized these values which were a legacy from her parents. Upon graduating from Morgan Park High School in 1957, Marion attended the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. She was an excellent student who earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois. While living in Champaign in the late 70’s, she stepped up as a servant leader, helping to organize and lead a community task force in opening a Champaign library branch, the Douglas Park Library, in the heart of the African American community. She also founded two women’s shelters. Marion was a dedicated educator. She taught at Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida. She also proudly taught for many years in the Chicago public schools and the Johnnie Coleman Academy. She loved teaching and enjoyed helping students gain mastery in reading and writing. Marion loved the Lord. She loved people and she loved life. She was very kind and would want us to be kind to one another. Marion Turner-Butler, “Pud”, made her transition to God’s loving arms on November 13, 2018. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Herbert Turner and Aldon Bland. Marion leaves to cherish her loving memories, her son Jason and wife Judy; her siblings, Melvin N. Turner and Marietta Turner; grandchildren Maurice Scott, Ricky Johnson Scott, Marcus Bell, Charles Bell, and Natalie Bell; nieces, Adrienne Carney, Beverly Bland, Denise Bland, and Dorrie Wheeler; nephew Robert Williams; and a host of friends.
