Mary Alice Green

Mary Alice (Nalls) Green was the tenth child born to Tommie Sr. and Charlena Newman (Nalls) on October 15, 1933 in Greenwood, Mississippi. Mary Alice was one of 12 siblings. She was raised on her family‘s farm in Silver City, MS and confessed Christ at a young age. She attended Mary Holmes Boarding High School in West Point, MS. After the passing of her mother, she moved to California with her brother Newman. They later relocated to Chicago, where she married George H. Green Jr. on March 16, 1956. This union was blessed with eight children. She worked in retail at Bonwit-Teller in the millinery department for approximately 10 years where she learned to wrap all sizes of boxes with perfection. A talent she passed on to her kids. She retired from School District 169 as Head Custodian in 1997, after 28 years of dedicated service. She relocated to her hometown, Silver City, MS to enjoy retirement. She enjoyed the warm weather, gardening, fishing, watching football and basketball games, and cooking a hearty meal to entertain family and friends. She became a foster parent to many children in need until her health began to decline in 2016. She truly demonstrated her commitment and love to being a vital woman in the village to help raise a child. She was a woman strong in will and strength. She demanded respect. She would “set you straight” if she thought that you were wrong. Failure was not an option. Get up and get started. “The only way to get finished is to get started.” We were advised “Any job assigned to you, do your best and take pride in what you were doing.” Her mantra: “Any job worth doing is worth doing well.” She decided her job was finished, journey was done and she was moving on. Therefore she took her final rest on Saturday, February 3, 2018, to be with the Lord Jesus Christ. Preceding her in death were her parents Tommie Sr. and Charlena; husband George (1997); daughter Sue (1993); and Mary Alice was the last survivor of her 12 siblings, brothers Clyde, Newman, Tommie Jr. and James; and sisters Etoila, Dorothy, Myrtle, Carrie, Samella, Jimmie Will and Mary Tina. Mary leaves to cherish her loving memory and continue her legacy, her children Tina, Karlton (Betty), Teresa (John), George Kirby (Jackie), Tammy (Morris), Vicki and Tashunda (Darryl) Shelton; three adopted children Demetrius, Jeremiah and Maria; 17 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends that she loved dearly.
