Camilla Hodges

Camilla "Camy" Hodges was born September 20, 1923 to James and Maggie Bryant of Somerville, Tennessee. After the death of both of Camilla's parents, in the early 1930’s her Grandmother Emma Futrell relocated to Chicago, Illinois along with her and her three siblings, Ethel, Charles and James Bryant. Camilla affectionately known as Camy was the eldest child. Camilla was educated in Chicago Public Schools, where she attended DuSable High School. She professed her faith in Christ as a young woman and was baptized by the Rev. Clay Evans of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. Camilla was a Homemaker. She later went on and started her own life and married but later became widowed. She had eleven children. Camilla loved the simple things like reading and listening to gospel music. Mahalia Jackson was one of her all time favorite gospel singers. She loved to keep a clean a house. People would often tease her children of how clean their home was. She instilled this same practice in all of her eleven children. She believed in cleanliness. She loved her family. She would often look forward to our family gatherings at Ron and Carols home or just spending the holidays with Ethel at their home. She enjoyed seeing all of her children and grandchildren. She was a loving, caring and generous person. She believed in “I may not have much but I can offer you what I have”. "Being a mother is an appointment from God". Camilla believed her calling in life was to nurture her children. No matter how hard things would get she kept all of her eleven children together. She cared sacrificially not only for her own eleven children, but also for her grandchildren. She was devoted to the tender guidance of her children as well as her grandchildren. She was very instrumental in the rearing of her grandchildren. She was often the baby sitter for all of her eleven children and she enjoyed every minute of it. On August 24, 2014, Camilla departed this life and is now in the presence of The Lord. She was preceded by her parents, her grandmother, her husband, one daughter Maggie; two sons, Kelvin and James Thomas (JT); and three siblings, Ethel, Charles and James Bryant. She leaves her life legacy molded and centered on Christ. This legacy is now cherished by her children, Doris Earley, Madlynn Carr (George), Suzanne Hill, John Rogers, Patricia Davis, Edward Rogers, Ethel Daniel, Carolyn Williams (Ronnie) and Troy Bryant (Sandra); grandchildren, Melvin Thomas, Twima Earley, Shawn Carr (Chalanda), Demoron Carr, Ricky Carr, Vevvaria Carr, Carla Langston, (Tim) Nicole Hill, John Rogers Jr., Koren Rogers, James Derrick Davis, Edward Johnson,(Michelle) Maria Johnson, Lisa Johnson, Ray Daniel, Derrick Rogers, Thomas Rogers, Tameka Rogers, Consuela Handy, Carmelita Handy, CaRon Williams and Ronnie Williams Jr.; 41 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends too numerous to mention.
