Delois Johnson

Sis. Delois Johnson was born on April 28, 1938 in Indianola, Mississippi to Mary Watkins and Arnie Harbour, Sr. She was the youngest daughter born to her mother Mary, and was affectionately called "Too Pretty" by her brother Bubba, who told her she was Too Pretty to cry. That nick-name stuck with her throughout her childhood! At the age of 12, Delois' mother passed and she came to live with her older sister Jewel and her husband Buddy. She was reared by them until she reached adulthood and beyond. Delois received her formal education in Mississippi and Illinois. Delois was baptized by the late Rev. W. M. Fox and became a member of the St. Peter's Rock Missionary Baptist Church in Pace, MS. In the very early 1960's, she met and married Issac Johnson and they made their home in Chicago, IL. They raised and imparted their love to four children. In later years God blessed her with another daughter, who completed the missing part of her family unit. Lois worked several jobs during her career which included, Stuart-Warner Co. and Century Drill and Tool Co. She also worked in early childhood development for Mt. Hope Childcare and Abraham Lincoln Childcare Centers. The scripture admonishes us to train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it. It was that early childhood training that led Lois to unite with Mt. Hope M.B.C. under the leadership of Rev. David H. Moore. She continued her service there under the late Rev. Vera Littleton, Rev. Julius Rawls and the current Pastor, Rev. George Hill. During her membership with Mt. Hope she worked with the Missionary Society, the Choir, The Women in Action and most recently the Mother's Board. As her health began to fail her, she was lovingly attended to and cared for by her children, and especially her daughter Genores. She fought a good fight and she kept the faith. On August 19, 2014, the Lord called Lois from labor to reward. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, six brothers and three sisters. Memories of her will always be treasured by her family and many friends, but especially by her sons: Troy and Myron; her daughters: Phyllis, Katrina and Genores (David); two grandsons that were raised by her: Marcus and Brandon; grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers: Bryant Jr., Charles, Glover, Alvin, Carl, Melvin, Ernest, Theaster and Harold; sisters: Bunch, Norma, Sharon, Shirley, Bernice, Mary and Cornelius; many neices, nephews, cousins, friends, including special friends: Barbara, Fannie, Alpha, Liz, Curtis Sykes and the Mt. Hope Church family. Rest well "Too Pretty", job well done; The song is ended, but the melody lingers on...
